’An Eye For An Eye’ was enthralling right from the start and Kate is such a fantastic character! This book was full of twists and turns, shocks, full of empathy and a great start to a new detective series. I hadn’t actually read one of Carol’s books before but I will be changing that for definitive!
Kate has been taking sometime off work to recover from a very traumatic incident of a mass shooting on a train. She is frustrated that she was taken off the case and made to take sick leave. But then her boss turns up and asks her to head up a murder investigation with a very small team that she will get to hand pick - she goes for Morgan and Emma. However, she is worried that there is an underlying motive behind her bosses wanting her to return before she was due to. Her husband Chris encourages her to return and to come off her medication as she is over reliant on it.
The murder victim is a wealthy business owner, who had been tied up and choked on pieces of apples and then his eye was gourged out. Not your typical MO! As the investigation progresses it becomes more complicated, there are multiple leads and Kate begins to wonder why it’s only the three of them working on the case? But is her paranoia about the cases justified or part of her mental health problems? Carol’s writing of Kate’s mental health problems was outstanding. I myself suffer from depression and anxiety and the way she wrote about protruding thoughts, time being missing and the trauma of events was truly exceptional. You can be doing something completely normal and then BANG you are elsewhere and reliving that event, which was Kate was the train incident.
I truly fell for the character of Kate. She is such a strong character and that shines through all the problems she is currently having. She cares for her team and even welcomes the new forensic officer into her personal life as she embraces the new friendship. She has that spark of though of ingenious detection and knows where to look intuitively. Plus she isn’t scared of a fight and will go against the grain.
I really enjoyed this introduction to Kate and I hope that the next instalment is not too far away!
