A Life For A Life by Carol Wyer

A Life For A Life by Carol Wyer

Nobody can get into the mind of an erratic killer—except an unpredictable detective.

When a young man is found lying on a station platform with a hole in his head, DI Kate Young is called in to investigate the grisly murder. But the killing is no one-off. As bodies start to pile up, she is faced with what might be an impossible task—to hunt down a ruthless killer on a seemingly random rampage.

Meanwhile, Kate has her own demons to battle as she struggles to come to terms with her husband’s death. And she is hell-bent on exposing corruption within the force and bringing Superintendent John Dickson to justice. But with the trail of deception running deeper—and closer to home—than she could ever have imagined, she no longer knows who she can trust.

With her grip on reality slipping, Kate realises that maybe she and the killer are not so different after all. But time is running out and Kate is low on options. Can she catch the killer before she loses everything?

Review

‘A Life For A Life’ is a dark twisted look at how grief can ravage the individual both psychologically and physically. It was a page-turner from the first chapter right till the end and oh what a satisfying end it was! I literally stayed up till 2 am to finish it as I was determined to find out what happened! It is just another sensational read from Carol! Carol is now one of my auto buy authors as you know that whatever you read from her is going to be fantastic. I will admit I don't even read the blurb now to see whether it tickles my fancy as I already know that it will do! I just dive straight in - like a true Carolholic that I am…

This is the third book in the DI Kate Young series and once again is a belter! It can be read as a standalone but I would suggest reading the previous two books as there are some references a new reader might not get in the back story to Chris’s death etc, plus they are amazing books so it would be a win-win!

When a young man is found died on a lonely platform in a rural train station with a hole in his head Kate’s team is called in to investigate. But there are no witnesses, no leads and Kate and her team are at a loss for the motivation behind the murder. Then the following day another body is found - this time a young woman at a retail park. The method is the same but everything else differs and again there are no witnesses! Are they victims related or are they being randomly targeted? The pressure is being piled onto Kate and her loyal team…especially when the next day brings another victim. Kate is also still looking into the circumstances between her husband's death and her boss Superintendent Dickson and is desperately trying to track down some witnesses before Dickson finds them!

I thoroughly enjoyed this outing for Kate and her team. I loved learning more about her team members in particular Emma. You find out more about her background and there also be a hint of romance in the air for her! I also felt more drawn to Jamie as well as he suddenly became more human and relatable but that is probably a reflection of Kate’s healing as well. It is beginning to feel as if I am catching up with friends when I pick up this series and that is always a brilliant sign of a high standard of writing from the author!

After THAT ending I can't wait to find out what is going to happen in the next book! Hopefully, it won't be too long a wait.

I have no hesitation in recommending this book!
