Hunter’s Revenge by Val Penny

Hunter’s Revenge by Val Penny

Hunter by name – Hunter by nature.

Detective Inspector Hunter Wilson is a loyal friend and a fair leader.

He is called to the scene of a murder in Edinburgh where the corpse has been fatally shot. He is dismayed to find the victim is his friend and colleague, George Reinbold. Hunter must investigate Reinbold’s murky past in Germany to identify George’s killer.

At the same time, Hunter is tasked with looking into a previously undetected criminal gang supplying drugs from Peru. There seems to be no connection between the murder and the drug supply until Hunter unexpectedly secures help from inmates of the local jail.

Hunter’s investigations are hampered by distracted members of his team and unobservant witnesses.

Reinbold was not the quiet, old man Hunter believed him to be and his killer bore their grudge for a lifetime.

Hunter's Revenge is the explosive second book in the DI Hunter Wilson thriller series.

Review

‘Hunter’s Revenge’ is the second book in this series and I loved returning to Edinburgh and spending time with these characters! This was a pacy and actioned packed story which dealt with a case which was personal to them all. When the head of forensics, George, is found dead, gunned down at his house, the team have to face the fact that they know very little about the man and his life. It's a tale which harks back to his youthhood in Germany and the death of a stassi officer. I loved this book! It's a great follow-up to the first book but you can read this as a standalone as well. The author does a great job of telling the reader the salient details. Yes, to get all the background it would be advisable to read the first book but I think you can enjoy this one on it's own!

Again for me the star of the show was Tim rather than Hunter! However, I will say I found Hunter more human in this book somehow. I think his fledging relationship with the pathologist is helping here but I certainly was more drawn to him this time around. But I think I have a book crush on Tim, don't know why but there we go! I also enjoyed seeing Jamie and Frankie, the hapless cousins, return from the last book as well. That was a lovely surprise - maybe not for Mel but they add an element of humour to the books.

I found the story to be full of twists and turns and great reveals. I was obsessed with the idea of George’s book collection - mine pales in significance to his. But it was his background story which I found to be heartbreaking and a very original idea. I enjoyed the slight historical fiction feel to it. ‘Hunter’s Revenge’ is a quieter book, as in there is less ‘action’ than the first book but that's what I enjoyed about it. It was about gathering the clues and putting all the information together rather than tearing about Edinburgh getting into mishaps etc.

I devoured this book and I will be using some of my reading time this Christmas to catch up and read the next three books!

Let me know if you read this one!
