Hunter’s Chase by Val Penny

Hunter’s Chase by Val Penny

Hunter by name – Hunter by nature: DI Hunter Wilson will not rest until Edinburgh is safe.

Detective Inspector Hunter Wilson knows there is a new supply of cocaine flooding his city, and he needs to find the source, but his attention is transferred to murder when a corpse is discovered in the grounds of a golf course.

Shortly after the post-mortem, Hunter witnesses a second murder, but that is not the end of the slaughter. With a young woman's life also hanging in the balance, the last thing Hunter needs is a new man on his team: Detective Constable Tim Myerscough, the son of his nemesis, the former Chief Constable Sir Peter Myerscough.

Hunter's perseverance and patience are put to the test time after time in this first novel in the DI Wilson Crime series.

Review

‘Hunter’s Chase’ is the first book in the Edinburgh Crime Mysteries and it was a tightly plotted tale that was full of twists and turns! It was a great introduction to DI Hunter and his team and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was a solid debut and I can't wait to dive into the rest of the series to see what happens to these characters and there are another four books ready and waiting!

DI Hunter is called to a scene in which his old boss, Sir Peter Myerscroft, and now Justice Secretary has come across a body whilst chasing a burglar from his house. Found in a shallow grave on a local golf course Hunter is now tasked with identifying her and solving her murder. He soon has another murder case to deal with when he witnesses a hit and run. When Sir Myerscroft’s son Tim joins the team Hunter is not happy as he doesn't want landed with a clone of his nemesis. But the bodies keep coming so its all hands to the deck to try and solve the cases…

For me the star of this book wasn't Hunter but actually Tim Myerscroft and I think I have a book crush on him! His character comes across as more unique and fresh than Hunter who seemed to embody the older bitter alcohol-drinking detective trope. I liked that Tim was grounded, loyal, intelligent and humble.

This was a great start to a new tartan noir series and whilst I thought it needed a bit of editing relation to the length and some repetition of events it was strong in a lot of areas - namely location, characters and the plotline.

Let me know if you pick this up.
