This is a gripping thriller which is hard to put down - impressive but as a debut novel, it’s a tour de force. It's set in the post-oil boom city of Aberdeen and DI Eve Hunter is the main character. Eve is a complex but well-constructed character. Her fears about returning to work six months after an incident which injured herself and paralysed one of her colleagues, the resulting mental health issues, an inner strength when dealing with doubting colleagues all adds up to a character that you want to learn more about and cheer for!
.
The rest of the investigative team all have their own flaws and backstory but they were all likeable characters. I hope this continues and each is developed, especially Ferguson for some reason!
.
The premise of the story is complex, thought-provoking and surprising in parts and full of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
.
I can honestly say I didn't manage to work out the killer! To be fair I had totally forgotten about them as being part of the team. I knew it was someone there but when it was revealed I was like huh! What now! Huh! It has been a while since this has occurred so well done Deborah!!!
