Review
‘The Mysterious Double Death of Honey Black’ is a engrossing time hop novel that has all the sparkle and excitement from the Golden Age of Tinseltown. This was the first book of Lisa’s that I have read but I will definitely be keeping an eye out for what comes next - hopefully another book in this series as I loved the concept! This was a very quick read and I flew through it in one sitting!
Lily Jones is loving her life in LA, it might not have worked out as she wanted as she is a chambermaid in the famous Beverly Hills Hotel, but she is in the city she loves! At least she gets to work in the renowned Paul Williams suite, which was the location of the murder of rising star Honey Black seventy years ago. After a bump on the head Lily finds herself in 1949 Hollywood, rubbing shoulders with the stars including Honey Black. Lily realises that Honey Black only has two weeks to live and is determined to stop the murder from occurring!
I really liked Lily as a character, she needs to brush up on her detection skills as she is a bit too trusting and naive but she has a heart of gold! She was also way too sassy and bold for the time period but I loved this about her. In fact, the book has a host of great characters, all fleshed out with historical details and culture. This is an era of movies that I have no idea about so if there were real-life characters included I have no idea, well apart from Hitchcock. But I like when an author does this as it makes the story much more authentic and this felt the case when I was reading the book.
Did I guess who the murderer was? Yes, I did from quite early on but I enjoyed seeing the storyline play out and Lily floundering about trying to work out who did it! This was a book of reveals for me rather than one with crazy twists and turns but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The historical aspects were on point and I loved the time hop element. It was well paced and I found it to be very engrossing!
Hopefully, this is the start of a new series as I would love to read more of Lily and her adventures in LA!
Let me know if you pick this one up.
