The Last Girl To Die by Helen Fields

The Last Girl To Die by Helen Fields

In search of a new life, seventeen-year-old Adriana Clark’s family moves to the ancient, ocean-battered Isle of Mull, far off the coast of Scotland. Then she goes missing. Faced with hostile locals and indifferent police, her desperate parents turn to private investigator Sadie Levesque.

Sadie is the best at what she does. But when she finds Adriana’s body in a cliffside cave, a seaweed crown carefully arranged on her head, she knows she’s dealing with something she’s never encountered before.

The deeper she digs into the island’s secrets, the closer danger creeps – and the more urgent her quest to find the killer grows. Because what if Adriana is not the last girl to die?

Review

Helen Fields is a master of her craft! ‘The Last Girl To Die’ is an outstanding piece of fiction that will send shivers down your back whilst pulling you along with it's tautly plotted tale. It is vividly atmospheric and a haunting thriller that is engaging, engrossing and thoroughly disturbing. The standard of writing is out of this world as Helen manages to induce the claustrophobic and uneasy feeling in the reader from the start! Even now days later I can still feel the chills.

Adriana has gone missing from her family home on the Isle of Mull. The family are American and due to the police not taking the case seriously they have hired a Canadan private investigator Sadie Levesque to search for their daughter. Sadie is good at her job and when she finds Adriana’s body in a cave wearing a seaweed crown she knows there is something very wrong on Mull. She is now searching for a murderer!

Oh my gosh, how I fell for Sadie as a character! Determined to do the right thing no matter what the cost. Such a unique character in that she specifically searches for lost teenagers. Yes, she was reckless sometimes in her actions but her motives were true. THAT ENDING - oft I was not expecting that at all.

I loved that there were nods to Helen’s Luc Callanach series with two crossover characters. Not going to say who as it's a lovely surprise when they turn up! I also loved all the references to the myths and history of Mull. I'm Scottish and didn't even know about the ship sunk just off the island! It caused much googling I can tell you.

This is an outstanding standalone novel from Helen and I adored my time in Sadie’s world. I can't do justice to this book as it was fantastic. Let me know if you read it!
