Review
‘Deadly Return’ is a brilliant start to PJ Skinner’s new cosy crime series! I am a huge fan of her Sam Harris series and I couldn't wait to pick this one up and it didn't disappoint. It came along at an opportune time as I have begun to get more into cosy crime and this has all the hallmarks of turning into a great series! I think this is PJ’s best book so far and I am already craving a return to Seacastle!
Tanya Bove, a former investigative journalist is adjusting to life as a newly divorced woman. At a house clearance she bumps into her old school friend Mel and they renew their friendship. But when Mel is found dead at the bottom of the stairs in that same house Tanya is determined to figure what has happened. The police, where her ex is the lead detective, have written it off as an accident but Tanya thinks there is more into it than it initially seems. As Tanya looks into the Conrad family she discovers a web of lies and secrets. But will she be able to uncover the truth before it is too late…
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and what made it was the strength of the characters and their development through the book! I instantly liked Tanya as a person and could imagine myself being friends with her. She has a core of steel and I like that she has overcome mental health issues and come out a more resilient person for them! Also, the relationship that she formed with Mouse was amazing to read. I love those two as a pairs of detectives. When you add in ‘friend/love interest’ Harry you have a crack team ready to go!
I was so caught up in the plot that I devoured this book in one sitting! It was incredibly well-written, plotted and the characters sparkled off the pages. Plus, there were a lot of mentions of cake. They seem like my people. I was hooked from the start and I didn't want the book to end. Thankfully I do know the next one won't be that long in coming!
Let me know if you pick this one up!
