About the author
H.C. Newell is an American author of epic fantasy. She is best known for the Fallen Light fictional universe, in which her fantasy novel Curse of the Fallen, is set.
Newell began her writing journey at a young age. In elementary school, she would often write small plays for her and her cousins to perform. In middle and high school her love of writing transformed into fiction literature, which she would write in spiral-bound notebooks. By 2015, she had written more than 5 romance and young adult novels and several short stories. In 2014, she started the Fallen Light series, and has currently published the first two books of the series.
Newell lives in Nashville, TN with her husband.

‘Curse of the Fallen’ is the first book in a brand new fantasy series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It tells the story of Nerana (Neer) who is born with a magical ability, the only problem being is that this is not allowed in her world. From birth she has been hounded by the Order of Saro and she is viewed as being a demon - someone to hate. She is known as ‘The Child’ and has bounty hunters as well as the Order on her tail.
This book definitely throws you straight into the action and Neer’s reality and it did not let up until the final chapter! I devoured this book in a couple of sittings and the author managed to build a complex world that fully engages the reader. Her writing allows the reader to envisage the setting very easily and builds upon the layers as we progress through the story. I really enjoyed learning about Neer’s history and I feel there is a lot more to be explored, especially in her childhood. She was a protagonist you couldn’t help but like. Despite the world throwing so much crap at her she still managed to show empathy and understanding when it comes to others. Especially other marginalised entities like the elves. Her relationship with her best friend Loryk was truly touching.
This was a great series to this series and I will be looking out for when the second book is released!
