Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery - Audrey App
Possibly the most delightful book ever written, Anne of Green Gables takes us to a time and place that seems simpler than the one we find ourselves in today - Prince Edward Island off the east coast of Canada in the late 19th century. We accompany Anne, a young orphan girl, through her early teenage years, and we challenge you not to fall in love with her and the world – full of natural beauty, gratitude and wonder – that she inhabits. Narrated by Mary Kate Wiles and a whole cast of actors, illustrated by another Anne mega fan, Weronika Marianna, and guided for Audrey by L.M. Montgomery scholar May Toudic. May’s guide offers historical context, insights into the author’s life, thought-provoking questions, a collection of reviews, a Spotify playlist and much more.

Review
I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading ‘Anne of Green Gables’ on Audrey. It's a fully immersive experience as you learn about the story, author and characters as you progress through the book. The last time I had read this book was as a child and that was many decades ago and it was lovely to return to an old favourite. To be honest I had forgotten a lot of the depth of the story and I enjoyed being part of the story again. However, I am not really here to review the story so to speak but rather my experience listening to it on the Audrey app.
As soon as I was told about Audrey I knew I would love it as I am one of those persons who googles everything to do with a book and likes to read professional and blogger reviews! I was also that person as a kid who bought the York Notes for books not just that they were studying at school but for every book that I read. In my head this was partly was the Audrey app was going to look like and indeed it was! As you progress through the chapters you are given recaps of the story, bios of the characters and then your guide also takes you through the book and adds in extra titbits about the book.
The above video was one section from our Guide, May Toudic, that I particularly loved as it allowed the listener to really visualise the setting and how Anne lived in the book! But then this appeals to me as a history student as it's a real reflection of the time period. You also know that you are in safe hands with your Guide as they are experts on the book which you are reading. May is a phd student in literature!
The narrator of the audiobook had a very soothing voice and was pleasing to listen to. The only thing I would have changed was the background music. I felt that was more of a distraction rather than an addition to the book. Alot the time I am listening to an audiobook whilst working and the music was just an added layer which meant I found it hard to do both at once.
Apart from that I loved my time listening to it on Audrey. It hasn't been my only book on there I have listened to and it won't be the last. Next up is ‘Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead’.
