Club 27 by Martin Tracey

DCI Judd Stone is heading for rock bottom. He breaks the rules, he gambles and he’s begun to play around. An unlikely lifeline is thrown Judd’s way when he finds himself catapulted into trying to prevent Rock and Pop sensation Phoenix from becoming the next member of the infamous 27 club – the name given to the list of iconic musicians who die at the age of 27.

Judd’s quest is not made easier when Phoenix’s lifestyle is even more self-destructive than his own – but how can Judd possibly protect someone from themselves?

And who else could be conspiring to benefit from Phoenix’s death? A crazed fan? Birmingham’s ruthless Gangsters? A Secret Society? Or maybe even those who Phoenix believes to be closest to her?

And when Phoenix embarks on an unprecedented tour performing at some of the most wondrous places of the world, the stakes to protect her become even higher.

The next leg of the tour saw Phoenix performing a single night on California’s Venice Beach. This was a very personal and significant choice of venue for Phoenix. She loved the music of The Doors and like any fan worth their salt she realised that the beach was the very location where Jim Morrison, himself a 27-club member, and the talented keyboard player Ray Manzarek had made the fateful decision to form a band. The rest, as they say, is history.

Due to the significant musical occasion, extra security resource had been required and Sab with some of her LAPD colleagues had naturally been drafted in to ably contribute. All of this assisted Judd in his quest to keep Phoenix safe from harm. And it was a good thing because Judd, had made the agonising decision to stay behind at the Grand Canyon and join the desperate search for William and Crystal who were both missing from a plane crash. He had promised that he would be there for the concert and he was merely delaying his arrival, but alas with his friends still missing he had failed to get there on time, compromising his own values and desire to protect Phoenix. Judd had decided that the extra security that had been drafted in would be enough protection for the singer and although not ideal he wouldn’t be missed for one concert.

In regards to the event itself, Judd had missed a treat. Phoenix had once again provided an iconic performance on her ground-breaking and unprecedented tour.

Unfortunately, Judd had also missed something else.

Due to his absence, it had been agreed that Phoenix would leave the stage after her final encore, boycott the dressing room and backstage frivolities and instead be ushered by Kaleb of all people immediately into a waiting automobile a la Elvis style in order to swiftly drive her away to her secret hotel.

However, in spite of the swarming level of LAPD officers and concert stewards, they were oblivious to the attack on the waiting chauffeur and his subsequent gagging. The poor chap was tied up and placed into the boot of his own car.

Phoenix, of course, knew nothing of this attack on the chauffeur and as planned she successfully reached the waiting car. Once inside she turned to her boyfriend who seemed to hesitate at the car door. “Aren’t you getting in Kaleb?”

“I’ll follow on babe, it’ll look better and confuse any paparazzi sniffing about. Don’t worry this guy will look after you. He’s better than that jerk, Stone, who couldn’t even be bothered to be here to look after you.”

Time being the essence, Phoenix saw no reason to distrust her boyfriend and relaxed further into the back seat of the car next to the seemingly hired bodyguard. It was a face she did not recognise and the bodyguard didn’t greet her with as much as a ‘hello’.”

Once the car began to speed away from Venice Beach, the driver spoke and she recognised the voice instantly triggering her guts to churn and sending a shiver down her spine. Before she had time to fully process what was happening the man sitting next to her had placed an injection in her arm causing her to fall asleep instantly.
